Articles (A, An, The) — The Tiny Words That Trap Toppers

Three of the smallest words in English — a, an, the — decide some of the most frequently asked questions in SSC CGL, IBPS PO, and State PCS prelims. They look harmless, but examiners hide traps inside them: a silent 'h', a university that starts with a vowel letter but a consonant sound, a superlative that demands "the". Master this chapter and you convert "guessing" into "scoring".

Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter you will be able to:

  1. Choose correctly between a / an / the / no article (zero article) in any sentence.
  2. Apply the sound rule (not the letter rule) for a/an — the examiner's favourite trap.
  3. Handle special cases: unique things, superlatives, musical instruments, holy books, rivers, countries.
  4. Spot article errors in Spot-the-Error questions within 15 seconds.

1. What Are Articles?

Articles are determiners placed before nouns. English has exactly three:

ArticleTypeUsed before
aIndefiniteSingular countable noun, consonant sound
anIndefiniteSingular countable noun, vowel sound
theDefiniteSpecific / already-mentioned / unique nouns

Indefinite (a/an) = any one, not specific → *I saw a dog.* (which dog? unknown)
Definite (the) = a particular one → *The dog was black.* (the same dog I mentioned)

🧠 Active Recall: Without looking back — which article is used for something mentioned for the *first* time, and which for the *second* time?

2. The Golden Sound Rule: A vs An

The choice depends on the first sound of the next word, not the first letter.

⚠️ EXAMINER'S TRAP BOX

  1. "An university" — WRONG. 'University' begins with a /juː/ (y) sound → a university.
  2. "A honest man" — WRONG. 'Honest' has a silent h → an honest man.
  3. "An one-eyed man" — WRONG. 'One' sounds like 'wan' → a one-eyed man.

🧠 Active Recall: Fill in: ___ umbrella, ___ hour, ___ union, ___ X-ray, ___ European country. (Answers: an, an, a, an, a)

3. Uses of "The" — The 12 Golden Rules

  1. Unique things: the sun, the moon, the earth, the equator, the internet.
  2. Second mention: I bought a pen. The pen is blue.
  3. Superlatives: the best, the tallest, the most honest.
  4. Ordinals: the first, the second, the last chapter.
  5. Rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges, deserts: the Ganga, the Indian Ocean, the Himalayas, the Thar. (But no article before single peaks/lakes: Mount Everest, Lake Titicaca.)
  6. Holy & famous books: the Ramayana, the Quran, the Geeta.
  7. Musical instruments: play the guitar, the flute.
  8. Newspapers: the Hindu, the Times of India.
  9. Countries with plural/union/republic names: the USA, the UK, the UAE, the Republic of Ireland. (But: India, Japan, France — no article.)
  10. Historical buildings/monuments: the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort.
  11. Adjectives as a class of people: the rich, the poor, the blind (= rich people in general).
  12. "The + comparative… the + comparative": The more you practice, the better you score.

🧠 Active Recall: Why does "Mount Everest" take no article but "the Himalayas" does? (Single peaks = zero article; ranges = the.)

4. Zero Article — When to Use NOTHING

Equally tested! Use no article before:

⚠️ Trap: "He goes to the school" = he visits the building; "He goes to school" = he studies there. Purpose → no article.

5. Mnemonic to Remember "The" Cases

"SUN-ROSE" — Superlatives, Unique things, Newspapers — Rivers, Ordinals, Sacred books, Epic monuments. If a noun fits SUN-ROSE, it almost certainly takes the.

6. 🔁 Linguistic Bridge — Hindi से English

हिंदी में हम कहते हैंगलत Englishसही English
"मैंने एक घंटा इंतज़ार किया"I waited for a hourI waited for an hour
"वह एक ईमानदार आदमी है"He is a honest manHe is an honest man
"मैं गिटार बजाता हूँ"I play guitarI play the guitar
"सूर्य पूर्व में उगता है"Sun rises in eastThe sun rises in the east
"मुझे चाय पसंद है"I like the tea (general)I like tea (general sense → no article)

Hindi has no articles, so our instinct is to drop them everywhere or copy sounds blindly. Train the opposite instinct: every singular countable noun in English needs a determiner.

7. Summary Table
