कथन (Narration) — Direct और Indirect Speech
- Assertive, Interrogative, Imperative, Exclamatory, Optative — पाँचों वाक्य-प्रकारों का रूपांतरण
- Universal truth, historical fact, past habitual जैसे अपवाद पहचानना
- परीक्षक के जाल (pronoun confusion, tense over-change, reporting verb trap) से बचना
1. बुनियादी ढाँचा: Reporting Verb और Reported Speech
हर Direct Speech वाक्य के दो हिस्से होते हैं:
> He said to me, "I am tired."
> ↑ Reporting Verb ↑ Reported Speech (उद्धरण चिह्नों के भीतर)
Indirect बनाते समय:
- said to → told (object हो तो), said (object न हो तो)
- उद्धरण चिह्न हटाकर that जोड़ें (assertive वाक्यों में)
- Reported Speech के भीतर pronoun, tense, time/place words बदलें
> He told me that he was tired.
🧠 Active Recall: बिना देखे बताइए — "said to me" का Indirect रूप क्या होगा और कब केवल "said" रहेगा?
2. Pronoun बदलने का नियम — S-O-N
यह Narration का सबसे प्रसिद्ध सूत्र है:
| अक्षर | अर्थ | नियम |
|---|---|---|
| S | Subject | First Person (I, we) → Reporting Verb के Subject के अनुसार |
| O | Object | Second Person (you) → Reporting Verb के Object के अनुसार |
| N | No change | Third Person (he, she, it, they) → अपरिवर्तित |
उदाहरण: She said to me, "I will help you."
- I (First Person) → Subject *She* के अनुसार → she
- you (Second Person) → Object *me* के अनुसार → me
- She told me that she would help me.
🧠 Active Recall: "He said to her, 'I love your brother.'" — Indirect में I, your, brother किसके अनुसार बदलेंगे?
3. Tense परिवर्तन की सीढ़ी
जब Reporting Verb Past Tense में हो (said, told), तो Reported Speech का tense एक कदम पीछे जाता है:
| Direct | Indirect |
|---|---|
| Present Simple (go) | Past Simple (went) |
| Present Continuous (is going) | Past Continuous (was going) |
| Present Perfect (has gone) | Past Perfect (had gone) |
| Past Simple (went) | Past Perfect (had gone) |
| Past Perfect (had gone) | अपरिवर्तित |
| will / shall | would |
| can | could |
| may | might |
⚠️ Reporting Verb Present/Future में हो तो tense नहीं बदलता:
> He says, "I am busy." → He says that he is busy. (कोई बदलाव नहीं)
अपवाद — tense नहीं बदलता:
- Universal truth / Scientific fact: The teacher said, "The earth revolves around the sun." → ...that the earth revolves around the sun.
- Historical fact: He said, "India became independent in 1947." → ...that India became independent in 1947.
- Past habitual action: She said, "I went to temple every Sunday." (आदत) → tense अक्सर अपरिवर्तित रखा जाता है।
- Unreal past / wish: "I wish I were a king" → were अपरिवर्तित।
🧠 Active Recall: "The sun rises in the east" को Indirect में बदलते समय rises बदलेगा या नहीं? क्यों?
4. Time और Place शब्दों का परिवर्तन
| Direct | Indirect |
|---|---|
| now | then |
| today | that day |
| tonight | that night |
| yesterday | the day before / the previous day |
| tomorrow | the next day / the following day |
| last night | the night before |
| ago | before |
| here | there |
| this | that |
| these | those |
| thus | so |
| hither | thither |
Mnemonic ट्रिक 🪄 — "न-ट-य-क-ह" (NaTaYaKaHa):
Now→then, Today→that day, Yesterday→previous day, Kal (tomorrow)→next day, Here→there।
याद रखें: *"नट यक हा — सब दूर हो गया!"* — Indirect में सब कुछ 'दूर' चला जाता है: now दूर होकर then, here दूर होकर there।
5. पाँच वाक्य-प्रकारों का रूपांतरण
(क) Assertive (साधारण कथन)
- said/said to → told; that से जोड़ें।
- He said to me, "I know your father." → He told me that he knew my father.
(ख) Interrogative (प्रश्नवाचक)
- said to → asked/enquired of; that नहीं, अर्थात् कोई conjunction नहीं (Wh-word हो तो वही जोड़ता है; Yes/No प्रश्न में if/whether)।
- सबसे बड़ा नियम: प्रश्न का inverted क्रम (verb + subject) बदलकर साधारण क्रम (subject + verb) हो जाता है, और प्रश्न चिह्न हट जाता है।
- He said to me, "Where do you live?" → He asked me where I lived. (❌ where did I live)
- She said to him, "Are you ready?" → She asked him if he was ready.
(ग) Imperative (आदेश/निवेदन)
- said to → ordered, commanded, requested, advised, forbade, urged (भाव के अनुसार)।
- क्रिया का Infinitive (to + V1) रूप; नकारात्मक में not to + V1।
- The teacher said to the boys, "Do not make a noise." → The teacher ordered the boys not to make a noise.
- He said to me, "Please help me." → He requested me to help him.
(घ) Exclamatory (विस्मयादिबोधक)
- said → exclaimed with joy/sorrow/surprise/wonder; what/how हटाकर that + very/great।
- He said, "What a beautiful flower!" → He exclaimed with joy that it was a very beautiful flower.
- She said, "Alas! My brother is dead." → She exclaimed with sorrow that her brother was dead.
(ङ) Optative (इच्छा/आशीर्वाद)
- said → wished/blessed/cursed/prayed; that से जोड़ें, may → might।
- He said to me, "May you succeed!" → He wished that I might succeed.
🧠 Active Recall: "Do you play chess?" और "Where do you play chess?" — दोनों में conjunction क्या-क्या लगेगा?
6. ⚠️ परीक्षक का जाल (Examiner's Traps)
> जाल 1 — Inverted order बरकरार रखना:
> विकल्प में "He asked me where did I live" देकर परीक्षक आपकी आदत का फायदा उठाता है। Indirect में प्रश्न-क्रम कभी नहीं रहता — हमेशा subject + verb।
>
> जाल 2 — Universal truth पर tense बदलना:
> "The teacher said that the earth revolved around the sun" — लगता सही है, पर गलत है। सार्वभौमिक सत्य हमेशा Present में रहता है।
>
> जाल 3 — Reporting Verb का भाव न पढ़ना:
> "Please sit down" को ordered से बदलना गलत है — यह requested माँगता है। "Don't go near the fire" → forbade/warned, केवल ordered नहीं। विकल्पों में reporting verb ही असली खेल है।
7. 🔁 भाषाई कंट्रास्ट (Linguistic Bridge): हिंदी में ऐसा, अंग्रेज़ी में वैसा
| हिंदी भाषी की आदत | गलत अंग्रेज़ी | सही अंग्रेज़ी |
|---|---|---|
| "उसने मुझसे पूछा कि तुम कहाँ रहते हो?" — हिंदी में क्रम नहीं बदलता | He asked me where did I live. | He asked me where I lived. |
| "उसने कहा कि मैं थका हूँ" — हिंदी में tense नहीं बदलता | He said that he is tired. (said के साथ) | He said that he was tired. |
| "उसने मुझे कहा" — 'to' की आदत | He told to me... | He told me... (told के बाद to नहीं) |
| "उसने कहा कि वह कल जाएगा" — 'कल' वैसा ही | He said that he would go tomorrow. | He said that he would go the next day. |
याद रखें: हिंदी में reported speech में tense और time-words स्थिर रहते हैं; अंग्रेज़ी में दोनों "पीछे और दूर" जाते हैं।
8. शब्दावली: Greek/Latin Roots (वाक्य और वाणी से जुड़े)
| Root | अर्थ | बने शब्द |
|---|---|---|
| dict (L.) | कहना | dictate, predict, verdict, contradict |
| log/loqu (L.) | बोलना | eloquent, dialogue, soliloquy, colloquial |
| voc/vok (L.) | आवाज़/बुलाना | vocal, invoke, revoke, advocate |
| nounce/nunci (L.) | सूचित करना | announce, pronounce, denounce, enunciate |
| verb (L.) | शब्द | verbal, verbose, proverb, verbatim |
| claim/clam (L.) | चिल्लाना/घोषित करना | exclaim, proclaim, clamour, acclaim |
| fess (L.) | स्वीकार करना | confess, profess, confession |
| graph (Gk.) | लिखना | paragraph, biography, telegraph |
📰 पठन बोध (Reading Comprehension) — संदर्भ में शब्द
> When the finance minister rose to announce the new climate budget, the opposition began to clamour for details. Her speech was eloquent but verbose; she would often contradict her own earlier verdict on coal subsidies. Critics later tried to revoke her promises, calling them mere verbal assurances, while her supporters would proclaim the budget a historic profession of India's green intent. One journalist noted, almost in soliloquy, that every prediction about the economy now depended on how loudly the public would exclaim — in praise or in protest.
Direct → Indirect |
|---|---|
| said to (object) | told / asked / requested / ordered |
| Assertive जोड़ | that |
| Yes/No प्रश्न | if / whether + साधारण क्रम |
| Wh-प्रश्न | वही Wh-word + साधारण क्रम |
| Imperative | to + V1 / not to + V1 |
| Exclamatory | exclaimed with joy/sorrow + that |
| Optative | wished/blessed + that, may→might |
| Pronoun | S-O-N नियम |
| Tense | एक कदम पीछे (Reporting Verb past हो तो) |
| Universal truth | tense अपरिवर्तित |
| now/today/here | then/that day/there |
🔁 2 दिन बाद दोहराएँ
- S-O-N नियम और tense-सीढ़ी को बिना देखे लिखें।
- 5 वाक्य-प्रकारों के एक-एक उदाहरण खुद बनाकर बदलें।
- Time-words की तालिका (now→then...) एक बार फिर देखें।
- अपनी गलतियों की सूची बनाएँ: क्या आप inverted order या universal truth में फँसे थे?
