Books & Authors
1. Why This Chapter Matters
Questions on famous books and their authors are among the most frequently asked static GK items in SSC, Railway, Banking and State exams. The good news: the facts in this chapter do not change. A book written in 1859 will have the same author forever. Learn this chapter once, revise it with the flashcards, and these become "free marks" in the exam.
2. A Short History of Books and Printing
- The earliest "books" were handwritten manuscripts on palm leaves, birch bark, cloth and later paper.
- Johannes Gutenberg (Germany) is credited with inventing the movable-type printing press in Europe around 1440–1450. The Gutenberg Bible was printed around 1455 and is considered the first major book printed with movable type in Europe.
- Printing reached India with the Portuguese; the first printing press in India was set up at Goa in 1556.
- James Augustus Hicky started India's first newspaper, the Bengal Gazette (1780) — a newspaper, not a book, but examiners often club these facts together.
Exam tip: Do not confuse "first printed book in Europe" (Gutenberg Bible) with "first newspaper in India" (Bengal Gazette). This is a classic trap.

4. Ancient and Classical Indian Works
| Work | Author |
|---|---|
| Arthashastra | Kautilya (Chanakya) |
| Ramayana | Valmiki |
| Mahabharata | Ved Vyasa |
| Abhijnanasakuntalam | Kalidasa |

| Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri | Jahangir |
| Indica | Megasthenes |
| Mudrarakshasa | Vishakhadatta |
Exam tip: *Akbarnama* and *Ain-i-Akbari* are both by Abul Fazl — examiners often offer Faizi as a tempting wrong option. Faizi was Abul Fazl's brother and a poet, not the author of these works.

Exam tip: *Poverty and Un-British Rule in India* (Dadabhai Naoroji) contains the famous Drain of Wealth theory — a question that appears repeatedly across exams.
7. PYQ Pattern Analysis (How Exams Ask This Chapter)
Based on the pattern of questions asked in SSC, Railway, Bank and State exams:
- Direct match questions — "Who wrote *The Guide*?" This is the most common format. The tables above cover the vast majority of such questions.
- Award-linked questions — Booker Prize and Nobel Prize winning books by Indian authors are asked again and again. Remember the year with the award.
- Confusing-pair traps — Examiners love near-correct options:
- *Akbarnama* — Abul Fazl (not Faizi)
- *1984* and *Animal Farm* — both George Orwell (not Aldous Huxley)
- *Gitanjali* — Tagore (not Sarojini Naidu)
- Ancient texts — *Arthashastra* (Kautilya), *Rajatarangini* (Kalhana) and *Indica* (Megasthenes) appear very frequently, often mixed with history questions.
- Autobiographies — *My Experiments with Truth* (Gandhi), *Wings of Fire* (Kalam), *Long Walk to Freedom* (Mandela) are evergreen questions.
- Negative questions — "Which of the following pairs is NOT correctly matched?" Read all four pairs fully before answering; three will be obviously correct, and the wrong pair usually swaps authors of two famous books.
Strategy: In the exam, a books-and-authors question should take under 15 seconds. If you have revised the tables, answer instantly and move on — do not second-guess a fact you have memorised.
