Important Days & Dates — A Calendar That Lives in Your Head
◆ Why is India's Republic Day on 26 January and not on 26 November, the day the Constitution was adopted in 1949? Because of a promise. At its Lahore session in December 1929 the Congress demanded Purna Swaraj (complete independence), and on 26 January 1930 Indians across the country celebrated it as "Independence Day". Twenty years later the makers of the Constitution chose the same date to bring the Constitution into force — 26 January 1950. So one date carries two stories, and 26 November got its own name too: Constitution Day. That is the secret of this chapter: every date has a story. Learn the story, and the date stays with you.
What you will learn (learning objectives)
The three national festivals and the "story" behind each important national day
Days that honour great Indians — whose birthday is which day
Defence and security days — Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Police
International days of the UN, WHO, UNESCO and other bodies — month by month
The look-alike pairs that examiners love (Hindi Day vs World Hindi Day, Teachers' Day vs World Teachers' Day, and more)
Simple tricks to remember them, and the traps to avoid
1. Two kinds of "days" — the master key
Almost every day in this chapter belongs to one of two families:
Person days — the birth (sometimes death) anniversary of a great person. Example: 5 September, Teachers' Day, is the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Event days — the anniversary of an event, a discovery, a law, or the founding of an organisation. Example: 7 April, World Health Day, is the day the World Health Organization (WHO) was founded in 1948.
Most Indian national days are person days. Most international days are event days. When you see a date, first ask: "Whose birthday?" or "What happened on this day?" That one question opens most answers.
🧠 Active Recall: Is 28 February (National Science Day) a person day or an event day? (Event day — C. V. Raman discovered the Raman Effect on 28 February 1928. Raman's birthday is a different date.)
2. The three national festivals
Republic Day — 26 January: the Constitution came into force in 1950.
Independence Day — 15 August: India became free in 1947.
Gandhi Jayanti — 2 October: birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (born 1869). The UN also observes 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence (declared by the UN General Assembly in 2007).
Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) — 26 November: the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on 26 November 1949. The Government of India declared it Constitution Day in November 2015 (the 125th birth anniversary year of Dr B. R. Ambedkar).

🧠 Active Recall: Which organisation's founding gives us World Health Day, and which gives World Food Day? (WHO, 7 April 1948; FAO, 16 October 1945.)

⚠️ Caution: Examiner's Trap
Trap 1 — "Similar Name": "World Hindi Day is celebrated on 14 September." Wrong — 14 September is Hindi Diwas (India). World Hindi Day is 10 January. The same trap works with Teachers' Day (5 September) and World Teachers' Day (5 October).
Trap 2 — "Chronological Confusion": "The Constitution of India was adopted on 26 January 1950." Wrong — it was adopted on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950. Watch the verbs: adopted ≠ came into force.
Trap 3 — "Almost Correct Statement": "National Science Day is celebrated on C. V. Raman's birthday." Almost right but wrong — 28 February marks the discovery of the Raman Effect (1928), not his birthday.
Trap 4 — "Negative Phrasing": "Which of the following is NOT a birth anniversary?" Mark each option P (person) or E (event) before answering; the odd one out is your answer.
🔁 In Hindi we say this, in English we say that
गणतंत्र दिवस — Republic Day

शहीद दिवस — Martyrs' Day
राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस — National Unity Day
सुशासन दिवस — Good Governance Day
किसान दिवस — National Farmers' Day
बाल दिवस — Children's Day
जयंती — birth anniversary
पुण्यतिथि — death anniversary
स्थापना दिवस — foundation day
विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस — World Environment Day

🔗 Static-Dynamic Link
The list of days keeps growing. Recent additions you should know, with their year: Parakram Diwas (23 January, declared 2021), Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (14 August, declared 2021), Janjatiya Gaurav Divas (15 November, declared 2021), Veer Baal Diwas (26 December, announced 2022) and National Space Day (23 August, first observed 2024).
Every year the UN and the ministries announce a new theme for many of these days. Themes change every year, so learn them from the current-affairs section for that year — not from this static chapter.
📅 Revision Planner: Three-Level Blurting
| Level | When | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 🔴 Immediate | After 2 days | On a blank page draw 12 boxes (January–December). Fill in every day you remember. Mark each one P (person day) or E (event day). |
| 🟡 Weekly | Day 7 | Write all nine look-alike pairs from memory. Then write the three defence days and the three national festivals with years. |
| 🟢 Monthly | Day 30 | Solve one practice set without notes. Next to every wrong answer, write the trap type. Then blurt all UN-organisation founding days (WHO, FAO, UPU, ITU, UN). |
