Order & Ranking — Chapter Outline
Learning Goals:
- Understand the core concepts of Order & Ranking
- Learn to solve problems on Order & Ranking
- Apply the concepts of Order & Ranking
Hook:
Imagine a queue of people. You know a person's position from the front and from the back. Can you find the total number of people in the queue? That is exactly what Order & Ranking questions ask — and with one simple formula, you can answer them in seconds.
Why this chapter matters:
Order & Ranking is one of the most scoring topics in the Reasoning section of SSC, Railway, Bank and State exams. Questions are short, need no long calculation, and follow a small set of fixed patterns. If you master the few standard types, you can solve these questions quickly and accurately.
What you will learn:
- Position from one end — finding a person's rank from the other end when total strength and one rank are known.
- Total strength of a row — finding the total number of persons when one person's positions from both ends are given.
- Number of persons between two people — using ranks from the same end or from opposite ends.
- Interchanging positions — finding the new total or new rank when two persons swap places.
- Ranking by comparison — arranging persons by height, weight, marks or age using "taller than", "heavier than" type clues.
Key formulas (to be explained with examples in the chapter):
- Total persons = (Position from left) + (Position from right) − 1
- Position from one end = (Total persons) − (Position from the other end) + 1
Common traps to avoid:
- Forgetting the "−1" when adding positions from both ends (the person gets counted twice).
- Mixing up "from the left" and "from the right" while reading the question.
- Assuming the direction of the row when it is not stated — read the question carefully.
